Series tip for couples · 5 min read
A sexologist recommends this series.
Why Friends Sex and Games helps couples who've lost the spark. And why the key game won't.
By Sonja Ruess · sexologist & SPIEGEL-bestseller author · Deutsche Version
Four couples, one group of friends, one bowl of car keys. That's the premise of Friends Sex and Games, streaming on Prime Video since 16 October. And let me say it right away: I recommend this show. Not because of the keys. Because of everything that happens before.
A week before the launch, Prime Video invited me as a sexologist to the special screening in Berlin. I met the cast and talked about the series with guests and press. Since then, one question keeps coming up: "Sonja, is a game like that a solution when the spark is gone?"
My honest answer is below. First, the show.
What the series is about
This is how Prime Video describes season one:
"Four couples. One sexy game. Anna's first love is back - and at a reunion party, they're suddenly staring at a bowl of keys: draw one and spend the night with its owner. No strings. No feelings. Is that even possible? Trust, jealousy, hidden desires, hilarious moments - and seriously hot sex. The game unleashes more than anyone bargained for and everyone tries to answer: what truly makes me happy?"
Cast: Paula Kalenberg, Fridolin Sandmeyer, Salka Weber, Martin Bruchmann, Mona Pirzad, Pascal Houdus, Lilja van der Zwaag and Eric Cordes
Directed by: Barbara Kronenberg and Sinje Köhler
Release: 16 October 2026, eight episodes, rated 16+
Synopsis and cast: Prime Video
A format that works around the world
Friends Sex and Games is the German version of a format that has sparked conversations before: the Mexican Prime series El Juego de las Llaves (The Game of Keys) launched in 2019 in more than 200 countries and was received so well that Prime Video ordered two more seasons.
The German adaptation was produced by UFA Fiction. All eight episodes have been available since 16 October, not just in Germany but in more than 240 countries and territories.
I'm not surprised that a story like this travels across continents. Because the real story isn't partner swapping. The real story is a feeling couples everywhere know.
Desire rarely dies with a bang.
It slips away quietly. Between calendars, kids, work and the sentence "we really should again…". At some point you're a great team. You organise, you function, you like each other. Only the wanting is gone.
She lies next to him at night, running through tomorrow's shopping list in her head. He barely dares to touch her anymore, because he's already expecting the next no. And both of them think the other one simply doesn't want it anymore.
I call it roommate mode. It has been my core topic for as long as I've worked with couples, and it's exactly where the series begins. This is how I put it in my interview with BILD:
"If sex has the quality of your annual tax return, why would my brain produce desire hormones?"
It isn't a question of love. It's a question of conditions. When all you do is function, your brain stays in duty mode, and desire doesn't grow there. Desire needs curiosity, lightness and a conversation you dare to have. I wrote more about that in When desire fades.
Why I recommend the show anyway
I advise against partner swapping as a rescue attempt. If you try to wake up a sleepy relationship with a night with someone else, you usually invite jealousy, comparison and new insecurity into your bed. Before you open your boundaries, you need a conversation about your boundaries. And most couples are missing that conversation long before.
And that's exactly why I recommend the series:
"It's a great door-opener for starting a conversation, because there's so much lightness and humour in it."
A series starts the conversation for you. You don't have to start with "we need to talk about our sex life". You can start with "what did you think of that scene?". That's a huge difference.
Three questions for your series night
Watch it together. And talk afterwards. That's the real episode.
- 1 · When did you last talk about wishes rather than schedules?
- 2 · What used to be natural between you, and isn't anymore?
- 3 · What have you still never dared to say?
You don't have to answer all three in one evening. One is enough. What matters is that you listen without defending yourself straight away.
In the press
For the launch, the German newspaper BILD spoke with me about the series. Read the article on BILD (German). You'll find more articles and interviews in our press section (German).
